Garage door off track? What to do (and not do) right now

A garage door that's come off its track is one of the more dangerous garage door problems. Here's what to do right now, and what to avoid.

When rollers pop out of the track, the door can jam, tilt or hang crooked in the opening. It's still connected to springs and cables under tension, which makes it unpredictable.

The most important thing is to stop using it.

What to do right now

  1. Stop pressing the remote or wall button.
  2. Unplug the opener so nobody triggers it by accident.
  3. Keep people, pets and cars away from the door.
  4. Don't try to push the rollers back in or force the door.
  5. Call a technician.
An off-track door can fall

The door is under spring and cable tension and can shift or drop while you're working near it.

Why garage doors come off track

  • Impact. A car bumps the door or track and bends it.
  • Worn rollers. Broken or seized rollers slip out of the track.
  • Loose tracks. Brackets loosen over time and the track shifts.
  • Cable or spring failure. One side drops and twists the door out of the track.

How it gets fixed

A proper repair starts by securing the door and finding what pulled it off track. Bent tracks are straightened or replaced, worn rollers and hinges are swapped out, and cables are checked before the door goes back in and is rebalanced.

Just popping the rollers back in usually means it comes off again. See our off-track repair service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my garage door back on track myself?

We don't recommend it. The door is under tension and can fall or twist while you work on it.

Why does my garage door keep coming off track?

Usually a bent or loose track, worn rollers, or an underlying cable or spring problem that wasn't fixed.

Is it safe to leave an off-track door open?

Leave it where it is and keep clear. Don't try to close it until it's been checked.
