Cable repair

Broken or slipped cable? Your door needs both sides lifting evenly.

  • Both cables replaced together
  • Drums & springs checked
  • Written price before work starts

Garage door lift cables work with the springs to raise and lower the door. They run from the bottom brackets up to drums on the spring shaft, and when one frays, slips off the drum or snaps, that side of the door drops and the door hangs crooked.

We replace cables in pairs so both sides lift evenly, check the drums, bottom brackets and springs for damage, and rebalance the door. If the door came off track when the cable failed, we fix that in the same visit.

Our cable services

A cable failure puts a lot of stress on the rest of the door, so we inspect the whole lift system with every cable job.

Lift cable replacement

Frayed, rusted or snapped cables replaced in pairs with the right length and strength for your door.

Slipped cable repair

Extension spring safety cables

Safety cables installed through extension springs so a broken spring can't whip loose.

Why garage door cables fail

01

Wear and rust

Cables fray over years of use, and rust at the bottom brackets weakens them from the ends.

02

Slack cables

If the door hits an obstruction or a spring loses tension, the cable goes slack and can jump off the drum.

03

Worn drums or bearings

Damaged drums let the cable wind unevenly, wearing it out faster.

Signs of a garage door cable problem

Stop using the door and call if you see:

  • The door hangs crooked or lower on one sideClassic sign of a slipped or broken cable.
  • Frayed or rusty strands on the cableA fraying cable can snap without warning.
  • A cable hanging loose from the drumThe cable has come off and the door is unbalanced.
  • The door jerks or lifts unevenlyOne cable is carrying more weight than the other.
  • A snapping sound, then the door drops on one sideThe cable or its spring has failed.

Safety first. Garage door cables are connected to springs under high tension. Never loosen bottom brackets or handle cables yourself; they can release suddenly and cause serious injury.

FAQs

Garage Door Cable Replacement FAQs

Can I use my garage door with a broken cable?

No. With a broken or slipped cable the door is unbalanced and can fall or come off track. Leave it where it is and call a technician.

Should both garage door cables be replaced at once?

Yes. Both cables have the same wear, and replacing them together keeps the door lifting evenly.

Why did my garage door cable come off the drum?

Usually the cable went slack because the door hit something, a spring lost tension, or the drum or bearings are worn.

Can a garage door cable be repaired or does it need replacing?

A cable that slipped off the drum can sometimes be rewound if it isn't damaged. A frayed, kinked or snapped cable needs to be replaced.

How long does cable replacement take?

Most cable replacements are finished in a single visit, including a balance check.
