Repair or replace? How to decide what your garage door needs

A broken garage door doesn't always need to be replaced, and a repair isn't always the cheaper choice in the long run. Here's how to tell which makes sense for your door.

Garage door with damaged top sections removed during a repair

Most garage door problems come down to one worn or broken part. Fix that part and the door is good for years. But when the door itself is failing, putting money into repairs just delays the inevitable.

The right call depends on the door's age, how much of it is damaged, whether parts are still available, and how often you've been paying for fixes.

When a repair makes sense

If the door is straight, solid and only one part has failed, a repair is almost always the better value. These are the most common repairable problems:

  • Broken springs. The most common failure, and fully repairable. See spring repair.
  • Frayed or slipped cables. Replaced in pairs in a single visit.
  • Noisy or worn rollers and hinges. Inexpensive parts that make a big difference.
  • Opener problems. Sensors, gears and remotes can usually be fixed without touching the door.
  • One damaged panel. Often replaceable if your model is still made.

When replacement is the smarter spend

  • Several sections are dented, cracked or rotted. Patching multiple panels rarely looks right or lasts.
  • The door was hit by a car and the tracks and frame are bent.
  • Parts are no longer made for your door model.
  • You're paying for repairs every year. The costs add up to a new door.
  • It's uninsulated and the garage is attached or has living space above it.

How we help you decide

When we inspect a door, we check the whole system: springs, cables, rollers, tracks, panels and opener. Then we give you a written price for the repair and, if it makes sense, a price for a new door so you can compare side by side. See our repair and replacement service for details.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a garage door last?

Many garage doors last 15 to 30 years depending on the material, use and maintenance. Springs, rollers and openers usually need replacing well before the door itself.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A single repair is almost always cheaper up front. Replacement becomes better value when the door has widespread damage, needs frequent repairs, or parts are no longer available.

Can a garage door hit by a car be repaired?

Sometimes. If only one or two sections are damaged and the tracks are straight, replacing those sections can work. Widespread damage usually calls for a new door.
