A clicking or humming opener that won't lift the door is one of the most common calls we get. Sometimes it's a two-minute fix. Sometimes it's a sign of a problem with the door itself that the opener can't overcome.

Here's what to check, in order from simplest to most serious.

6 reasons your opener clicks but won't open

1. Dead remote or keypad batteries

If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, start with a fresh battery. Weak batteries can send just enough signal to click the opener's relay without starting the motor.

2. The door is manually locked

Many doors have a slide lock or handle lock on the inside. If it's engaged, the opener will strain against it. Unlock it before trying again.

3. Blocked or misaligned safety sensors

The photo-eye sensors near the floor stop the door from closing if something is in the way. If they're dirty, bumped or blocked, the opener may click and refuse to close. Clean the lenses and make sure both indicator lights are steady.

4. The emergency release is pulled

If someone pulled the red emergency cord, the trolley is disconnected and the motor will run without moving the door. Reconnecting it usually just means running the opener until the trolley catches.

5. A stripped drive gear or worn trolley

If you hear the motor running but the chain or belt isn't moving, the plastic drive gear inside the opener may be stripped. This is a repairable part, but it needs a technician.

6. A broken spring

This is the big one. If a spring has broken, the door becomes too heavy for the opener to lift. The opener hums, maybe lifts the door a few inches, then stops or reverses. Look for a gap in the spring above the door.

What not to do

Stop pressing the button

If the opener is straining, repeated attempts can strip gears, burn out the motor or pull the door out of balance. If a spring is broken, the door could drop.

If you've checked the batteries, lock, sensors and release and the door still won't move, it's time to call a technician. See our opener repair service.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my garage door opener hum but not open?

Usually a stripped drive gear, a disconnected trolley, or a broken spring that makes the door too heavy to lift.

Can I open my garage door manually if the opener won't work?

Only if the springs are intact. Pull the emergency release and lift gently. If the door feels very heavy, a spring may be broken, so stop and call a technician.

How long do garage door openers last?

Many openers last 10 to 15 years with normal use. Older openers also lack modern safety and security features.
