A broken garage door spring is the most common reason a door suddenly won't open. The springs do the heavy lifting, not the opener, so when one snaps the door becomes dead weight and the opener can't raise it safely.
SoCal Garage Door Pros replaces torsion and extension springs for homes across the San Fernando Valley and LA County. We match each spring to your door's actual weight and height, balance the door by hand, and set the opener so it runs smoothly again.

Our spring repair services
Every spring job starts with an inspection of the whole lift system, because a broken spring often strains the cables, drums and opener too.
Torsion spring replacement
The spring mounted above the door on a steel shaft. Replaced with a spring rated for your door's weight and wound to the right tension.
Extension spring replacement
The springs running alongside the horizontal tracks. Replaced in pairs with new safety cables so a future break can't whip loose.
High-cycle spring upgrade
Longer-lasting springs rated for many more open-and-close cycles, a good fit if the garage is your main entrance.
Balance & safety check
After the swap we balance the door, check cables, drums and bearings, and test the opener's force and auto-reverse.
Torsion vs. extension springs
Torsion springs
Mounted on a shaft above the door opening. They wind and unwind to lift the door, give smoother and more controlled movement, and are standard on most modern two-car doors.
Extension springs
Mounted above the horizontal tracks on each side. They stretch as the door closes and pull it up when it opens. Common on older and lighter single-car doors.
Signs your garage door spring is broken
Springs usually fail without much warning. Watch for these:
- A loud bang from the garageTorsion springs release their tension all at once when they snap. It often sounds like a firecracker.
- The door won't lift or feels very heavyWithout spring tension, the door's full weight lands on the opener or your arms.
- A visible gap in the springA torsion spring that has broken shows a two-inch gap in the coil.
- The door opens a few inches and stopsThe opener senses too much resistance and reverses to protect itself.
- The door closes too fast or crookedOne broken spring on a two-spring door throws off the balance.
Safety first. Please don't try to adjust or replace a garage door spring yourself. Springs hold hundreds of pounds of tension, and winding bars can cause serious injuries when they slip.
